Our 70th Foreign Tour

In the past we have taken several groups to the British Isles, including parts of Scotland for two or three days. This is the first tour planned specifically for Scotland. Last week I was talking with a friend who has traveled with us several times. He and his wife have been to Scotland twice in recent years and covered some of the places we will be going. Twice he used the phrase, "Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful" to describe the country.

Elizabeth and I would like to invite you to join us for this leisurely tour of the Highlands of Scotland. In addition to the beauty and the history of Scotland, there is a considerable amount of church history to consider in the area.

We Will Visit…

• Glasgow. Scotland's largest city founded by St. Mungo in A.D. 550.
  
  
• Stirling and Oban. Visit Stirling Castle and its lovely gardens. It was home to most of the King Jameses. The castle looks down upon Bannockburn, Scotland's proudest battleground where, in 1314, Robert the Bruce secured Scotland's independence when he defeated the English. See the Church of the Holy Rude where John Knox preached, and the Erskine Monument. Follow Loch Lomond to Oban, a seaport on the firth of Lorn.
  

• Iona. Take the ferry from Oban to the Isle of Mull, then on to the Isle of Iona, where many Scottish kings lie buried. St. Columba and his disciples landed here from Ireland in A.D. 563 and established Scotland's first Christian monastic settlement, resulting in the extension of Christianity throughout Scotland and Europe. Today it serves primarily as a religious retreat center. Visit Iona Abbey and return to the mainland and Oban for the night.

• Isle of Skye and Fort William. Follow the shores of lovely Loch Linnhe to Glen Coe, site of the notorious 1692 massacre of the McDonald clan by the Campbells. Continue on to Mallaig where you board a ferry to Armadale Pier on the Inner Hebridean Isle of Skye. Visit the Clan Donald Center with its magnificent park and hear about 13 centuries of clan history. Drive back over the Skye Bridge and then on to Fort William, in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain.

• Loch Ness and Inverness. Drive past Invergarry to Loch Ness. As you skirt the banks of the loch, be sure to watch out for "Nessie," the mysterious Loch Ness monster. Then drive to Inverness, at the northern end of the Great Glen, long known as the capital of the Highlands.

• Balmoral Castle, Braemar, St. Andrews. Balmoral Castle is the Queen's residence during hunting season. Braemar is the site of the royal Highland Games. St. Andrews, named for Scotland's Patron Saint, is where George Whishart, the Reformation scholar, preacher, and companion of John Knox (1505-1572), was martyred by being burned at the stake in 1546. Knox preached and was imprisoned here. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was founded in 1754. The University of St. Andrews is Scotland's oldest university (founded 1413).

• Edinburgh. Our sightseeing includes Princes Street and the Royal Mile, the Scott Monument, St. Giles Cathedral where John Knox preached, Edinburgh Castle, Greyfriars Church and the Grass Market. We will have a day and a half free in Edinburgh to explore the city as you wish. We return from Edinburgh to the USA.

What Is Included?

Our 11 Day Scotland Tour includes air transportation from Newark International Airport on Continental, first class and select hotels, Scottish breakfasts and eight dinners, private motor coach, comprehensive sightseeing with an English speaking tour manager, admissions, porterage, etc.

What is the Cost?

We are able to offer this excellent tour for $3140.00 per person — (based on double occupancy and 20 or more tour members). Single supplement for an individual desiring a single room is $600 (based on availability). Airport taxes and security fees amount to $285 and tips are $100. A deposit of $300.00 will reserve a place for you. Early reservation is a must!

Is This a Good Time to Visit Scotland?

Our tour is scheduled for depature on September 10 from Newark. This time takes advantage lower air fares. The average monthly temperature for September is about 60°. Rainfall for the month averages about 2.5 inches.

The detailed brochure will be ready in a few weeks. We are now ready to receive reservation deposits from those who wish to join us for the trip. The complete brochure will include cancellation policies. At this point I must state that there will be an administrative cancellation fee of $50 per person for any person cancelling at any time after making a deposit. Other graduated cancellation requirements begin 95 days prior to the departure date.
